Went to see Transformers 2: Rise of The Fallen today with some coworkers. It was neat to go with them, but the movie wasn't all that great. Lots of effects, but not much in the way of good dialog or plot. Very MacGuffin rich, though.
I hadn't actually seen the first movie, which is kind of sad considering what a big fan I was of the animated series and the toys when I was a kid. I guess it met my expectations, which were low. Lots of explosions and fighting robots.
The one high point for me was the inclusion of Jetfire as an SR-71 Blackbird (my favorite aircraft).

I watched The Rock. Yeah, I had never seen it before. For an action movie it wasn't bad, I guess. It made me think of the Team Fortress level...

I watched AEon Flux (the movie) tonight. What a disappointment. I am a fan of the animated version going back to the Liquid Television days, but this incarnation loses a lot of the mystery, evil, and duplicity. Just not as interesting.

| DVR Spring Cleaning |

Today I watched Bowling For Columbine and Futurama: The Beast With A Billion Backs. Although I think some of the points in Bowling were interesting, it was way too heavy handed for my taste, and a few of the things mentioned were just wrong which detracts from the impact for me. Futurama was enjoyable, but nothing to write home about.

We watched Howl's Moving Castle tonight. I thought it was pretty good, but blessed_lunatic thought it was 20 minutes too long and that it stopped making sense for the last bit.

Oh, I went by Best Buy today to check out the anime selection, since the local store is one that is closing out the genre at 50% off. I only saw two things I considered getting, Appleseed Ex Machina and Howl's Moving Castle. I got Howl's; I haven't seen it, but I've heard good things. The selection wasn't bad, there just wasn't a lot that I had heard of and/or was interested in. |

I went to see Watchmen this afternoon. I know, everyone and their mother has seen it already, so I won't belabor the same stuff (it's violent, similar to the book but not as rich, confusing for people who haven't seen it, etc.).
Okay, I lied. I do want to say that I wouldn't recommend it for someone who hasn't already read the book. I think the movie serves as a great set of crib notes for the book, but simply due to the translation issues and time issues, it doesn't have the same depth. That's not a negative reflection on the film makers in any way, they did a great job of translating the material to the screen, they just don't have enough meta context to work with.
I'll probably buy it when it comes out on DVD, if only in part due for the additional material, but I won't be the first in line for it.

Last night I watched Throw Down Your Heart that I recorded off of PBS. Some really amazing stuff, although I'm not sure if I should count it as a movie or not.
Also, a coworker pointed me to a really amazing video of Chris Thile and Brian Sutton playing for about 21 minutes straight in three parts.

We watched The Ice Pirates last night. Ahh... wow... cheesy sci-fi with VD and castration humor as a "bonus"... Not recommended.

blessed_lunatic and I watched The X Files: I Want to Believe tonight. It was awful. Just awful. We used to watch the show, until the law few seasons, and this movie was just an insulting waste of time. Worse than the new Indiana Jones movie (although I think blessed_lunatic disagrees with me on that point). At least Crystal Skull had decent action, enjoyable pacing, and better references. The most enjoyable part was thinking about what would be happening if it were an episode of Californication instead. It would have been better if they had touched on the mythos stuff, I think.
Thumbnail review: Complete waste of time.

We watched Tomorrow Never Dies tonight. Meaningless fluff. I have some friends who were complaining about the writing in Quantum of Solace, but I think they are forgetting what horrible campy stuff some of the older Bond movies had.
James Bond: [after throwing a bad guy into a printing press] They'll print anything these days.

We watched Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull last night. It was rather disappointing, but in style and plot, but I didn't expect too much... but seriously, aliens?

blessed_lunatic and I watched Stargate: Continuum this weekend. It was just like a long episode that sort of wrapped up the Goa'uld, but... it took a lot of plot elements from Star Trek: First Contact. It's not that it was bad, but that it just wasn't... very meaningful.
Bob loaned me his copy of Watchmen on Monday. I'm on chapter 8. So far it's interesting, although I don't think the graphic novel is really the medium for me.
I got my copy of Civilization: Revolution for the DS on Saturday. I've spent a couple of hours playing it so far. I is a simplified version of Civ, but it has enough to it that it's still engrossing to play.
In unrelated information, I haven't been sleeping well lately, and I've had some unsettling dreams. I'm not sure why.
